What does delegation really sound like when it’s working?
I’ve been in a series of 1:1 conversations as part of a leadership assimilation journey for a leader who has stepped into a high-growth, high-visibility role. This journey isn’t just about the leader. It includes deep conversations with the ecosystem around them – manager, direct and indirect team members, peers, business heads.
Listening, understanding, and creating space for what is really being experienced. All these in service of the leader’s growth. And something beautiful kept emerging in these conversations. I kept hearing, not once or twice, but again and again.
“This leader is there for me.”
“I feel trusted.”
“I’m empowered.”
What became even more evident is this was not about tasks getting done. This was about people stepping into their potential. This is delegation at its best.
And yet, most of what we call delegation looks like this: “Here, you take it.” And then we step back, we watch, we evaluate, we judge.
That is not delegation. That is abandonment.
This came alive for me from attending a powerful session by Harvard Professor Frances Frei session recently.
You can never say “Delegation without “Empowerment”, and vice versa.
Because real delegation is developmental. It says: “I am giving this to you because I believe you can grow through it and I am co-signing your success.”
That changes everything.
Delegation is an act of leadership, trust, and empowerment.
And when leaders show up this way, something shifts. People don’t just deliver. They step in. Step up. And surprise themselves.
Imagine if this mindset shift about delegation became the culture across your organization. What would become possible?
